What a college essay is read for

A college essay is written for a course: an argument, an analysis or a response to a prompt, most often in MLA or APA style. Whatever the subject, an instructor reads it for the same few things: a clear claim, paragraphs that each move that claim forward, evidence that is cited, and sentences that do not get in the way. This page is about course essays. Application essays and personal statements are a different kind of writing, judged on different grounds, and the Essay Review is not designed for them.

Five checks to run before you hand it in

1. Find your thesis statement

Underline the one or two sentences that state your claim. If you cannot find them, or they only announce a topic, your reader cannot either.

2. Read only the first sentence of each paragraph

Together they should sketch the argument in order. A paragraph whose first sentence has nothing to do with the claim is the one to cut or rewrite.

3. Match every source

Each in-text citation should have an entry in your Works Cited or References, and each entry should be cited at least once.

4. Reread the conclusion against the thesis

The conclusion should answer the question the thesis raised, not introduce a new one.

5. Read it aloud

Typos, missing words and sentences that run on are easier to hear than to see.
