Taylor & Francis submission requirements
Taylor & Francis (T&F) and its Routledge imprint publish over 2,700 journals across all major disciplines, including social sciences (Applied Linguistics, British Journal of Educational Studies), humanities (Journal of Modern History), sciences (Molecular Physics), and engineering (International Journal of Production Research). Citation styles vary by journal family. T&F journals increasingly require ethics statements, data availability declarations, and open access compliance. Their submission portal (Manuscript Central/ScholarOne) has specific file formatting requirements. Our checker validates T&F manuscript conventions.
Taylor & Francis and its Routledge imprint together publish more than 2,700 peer-reviewed journals across every academic discipline — from social sciences and humanities to science, technology, engineering, and medicine. This breadth means there's no single "Taylor & Francis format": requirements vary significantly between journal families. What applies universally are the submission portal requirements, declaration standards, and the ethical guidelines that T&F enforces across its entire portfolio.
Citation Style: Finding the Right One
Taylor & Francis journals do not use a single citation format. Citation style is determined by the journal and its discipline:
- APA — most social sciences journals (education, psychology, applied linguistics)
- Chicago author-date — many humanities journals
- Vancouver — clinical and health sciences journals
- AMA — some medical journals
- NLM/Harvard — varies by journal family
The most common mistake among T&F submitters is using a citation style from a previous submission to a different T&F journal. Authors who recycle manuscripts between Taylor & Francis journals without reformatting references generate the most common editorial query in the T&F portfolio. Always check the specific journal's "Instructions for Authors" page — not the generic T&F author guidelines — for its required citation style.
Ethics and Declaration Requirements
All Taylor & Francis journals require a set of standard declarations to appear in the manuscript itself (not only in the submission portal):
- Disclosure statement: All potential conflicts of interest for all authors, or an explicit statement that no conflicts exist
- Funding acknowledgment: Funder names and grant numbers in T&F's standard format
- Ethics approval: For human subjects research, institutional ethics committee approval number and date
- Data availability statement: Where underlying data can be accessed
Many T&F journals also require an author contribution statement (using CRediT taxonomy or free text), particularly in STEM disciplines. Social sciences and humanities journals vary. Submitting without the disclosure statement is one of the top administrative rejection triggers across the T&F portfolio.
Open Access at Taylor & Francis
Taylor & Francis publishes both subscription and open-access journals. For subscription journals, T&F Open Select provides a hybrid option where authors pay an article processing charge (APC) for immediate open access after acceptance. Fully open-access Taylor & Francis journals are published under Creative Commons licenses and require APC payment at acceptance.
If your funder mandates open access (UKRI, Wellcome Trust, ERC, NIH), you must comply with your funder's OA policy. T&F participates in Read & Publish agreements with many universities — check whether your institution has an agreement that covers your APC before submission.
File and Format Requirements
T&F submissions via ScholarOne Manuscripts or Editorial Manager require specific file formatting. Figures should be submitted as separate high-resolution files (300 dpi minimum for halftones, 600–1200 dpi for line art). A running head (short title ≤50 characters) is required and is frequently missing from manuscripts reformatted from other publishers. CheckMyManuscript flags missing running heads, absent declaration sections, and citation style inconsistencies before you upload to ScholarOne.

The practical edge your peers already use
Across disciplines and career stages, researchers reduce bottlenecks and submit with confidence: clearer drafts, easier guideline compliance, and less back and forth with co‑authors and reviewers.
I use it to review my students' papers. It instantly highlights typos, missing references, and unclear sections, helping me focus my feedback on the quality of the research instead of surface errors.
Ilyass
Professor in Mechanical Engineering, ÉTS Montréal
I relied on it throughout my thesis to strengthen my writing. It suggested clearer phrasing, improved flow between sections, and ensured my references were complete before the final deadline.
Manon
Master's Student in Speech Therapy
I write research in both Portuguese and English, and it adapts perfectly to either language. It provided precise feedback in Portuguese, helping me maintain academic tone and consistency across my drafts.
Afonso
PhD Candidate, UFPE
It gave excellent advice on how to rephrase and present ideas more clearly and concisely. The suggestions helped me refine my arguments and make my research more impactful.
Félix
Postdoc Researcher, Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology
A round of suggestions helped to generally refine the text of my paper and, moreover, to present some of its key points in a more focused form.
